A stunning geode featuring vibrant Amethyst crystals alongside beautifully defined cubic Calcite crystals. This remarkable specimen comes from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, a region renowned for producing some of the world’s finest geodes.

The formation of Amethyst is a fascinating two-stage process. First, a hollow cavity forms within volcanic rock due to gas bubbles trapped in lava as it cools. Over time, groundwater rich in silicates and other minerals infiltrates the porous igneous rock. As mineralized water flows through the hollow spaces, it begins to deposit layers of minerals, starting with Agate. Once this foundational layer is formed, conditions become ideal for Quartz—and eventually Amethyst—crystals to grow. Amethyst typically forms at low temperatures, often below 100°C, and sometimes as low as 60°C.

This particular geode is a rare find, with a striking contrast between the deep purple Amethyst crystals and the light, geometric Calcite formations. Graptemys pseudogeographica – the False Map Turtle – is a freshwater species native to rivers. A strong swimmer, the false map turtle prefers rivers and large creeks with moderate currents, where aquatic vegetation, snags, and floating logs are abundant. It is also well-adapted to deep, fast-moving waters. While they can be found in oxbow lakes and sloughs, they are absent from lakes, ponds, and small streams.

This species is known for its striking pattern. This particular specimen comes from northern Mexico and is a non-CITES species.
